why aren't there any good new york college football teams?
it is a huge state and city, why does Syracuse suck so badly? ... same with pretty much every new york college..?... rutgers is in new jersey

Rutgers was a top-25 team a couple years back, they're near NYC. I think a lot of it has to do with the lack of tradition, and the fact that there are very few teams that are in BCS conferences, and those that are are in the Big East which is one of the weaker ones

A variety of interests. In NY, lacrosse, rugby and hockey are big, along with football, baseball and basketball. So even though there are millions in NY, there aren't a whole lot of d1 prospects, and they usually go out of state. Syracuse is decent at keeping recruits, but haven't had a good coach in years.

Columbia was big time till the 1940s and then the college program just moved west. The schools remained academic and not really big time football. Basketball was king until the late 1970s and that even fizzled .... just not the powerhouse of football. and it has always been a pro town.
