Can I not bring my wife with me to AIT because she is going to college in New York, and we need her high BAH?
Is there anyway I can "defer" my wife moving in with me to AIT? If it helps I am going to The Defense Language Institute, I will be an E-4, and I will be a new enlistee. My AIT could be up to 80 weeks long, and she doesn't graduate for a a couple of years, and thats where she pays taxes, lives, ect.

Answer 1 :
It's up to you whether you bring her with you or not. Where the BAH will be based on depends on if they let you claim where she goes to school.
Answer 2 :
Nope, sorry...you are not entitled to have your dependants with you at government expense until you reach your first permanent duty station.
Answer 3 :
Your wife should be able to stay in new york while ur in ait if you choose to do that then when you get to your first duty station is when she can come..... AIT must be 20 weeks or longer before she will be authorized to live with you in AIT anyways
Answer 4 :
Your spouse never has to accompany you to your duty station. But, if your spouse is eligible to accompany you, Your BAH is based on your location, not hers. You are not eligible to live in the barracks So if your spouse is on your order to DLI You will be paid bah based on DLI, not NY You will have to rent a place to live at DLI and provide housing for your wife in NY. The military only provides on source of housing, unless it is an unaccompanied tour. NOTE: DLI is one of the few AIT's that spouses can accompany the servicemen to, due to the length of the training.
Answer 5 :
they will tell you there if your dependants are able to move in with you during ait. chances are though that they will not. BAH will be based off of where you're ait is
Answer 6 :
I was married when i was in AIT. The whole time, from basic to AIT, my BAH was based on where my wife was living, which happened to be my home of record..houston, tx. I was an E-4 as well b/c i had a college degree before i joined. I also stayed in the barracks during training. From my experience, i can be safe in saying that your bah will be based on your home of record. Once you go to permanent duty station bah is based on the area of where you're stationed. i took a $500 bah cut from houston,tx to ft campbell ky...so be aware of those things when planning..so no you dont have to bring your wife...since you're in AIT i think this is probably the only opportunity where you'll be able to live in barracks and get your full BAH...hope that helps.
Answer 7 :
Monterey BAH is pretty decent. BUT that being said.. if you get accompanied orders you CANNOT live in the barracks.. which means you have to live off base and rent..plus pay for her expenses in NY. No Family Sep allowance either. you would have to request an exception to policy..and those are not always granted.
