If my grades, SAT/ACT scores, extracurriculars, etc. are where they should be, will it be pretty easy? Will they be hesitant because of where I come from, or will they openly welcome me?

If you're looking at a SUNY or CUNY (State U of NY, City U of NY, respectively), it will be more difficult to get into because you are out of state. However, looking at private universities, such as NYU, Columbia (both in the city), Vassar, Hamilton, Colgate, or Skidmore (not in NYC), to name a few, they will not discriminate if you are not from New York. It depends for each school what your test scores, etc. should be to get in, but what I can tell you is do your best and then apply to colleges based on that. Sometimes, living in a location such as South Dakota, where I assume not many people are planning on applying to colleges in New York, can be helpful. A lot of schools want geographic diversity, meaning they want to have students from all over the country, rather than just from New York. Good luck!
