How hard would it be for someone from South Dakota to get into a New York college

How hard would it be for someone from South Dakota to get into a New York college?
If my grades, SAT/ACT scores, extracurriculars, etc. are where they should be, will it be pretty easy? Will they be hesitant because of where I come from, or will they openly welcome me?

If you're looking at a SUNY or CUNY (State U of NY, City U of NY, respectively), it will be more difficult to get into because you are out of state. However, looking at private universities, such as NYU, Columbia (both in the city), Vassar, Hamilton, Colgate, or Skidmore (not in NYC), to name a few, they will not discriminate if you are not from New York. It depends for each school what your test scores, etc. should be to get in, but what I can tell you is do your best and then apply to colleges based on that. Sometimes, living in a location such as South Dakota, where I assume not many people are planning on applying to colleges in New York, can be helpful. A lot of schools want geographic diversity, meaning they want to have students from all over the country, rather than just from New York. Good luck!

How hard is it to find a job in New York City without college education

How hard is it to find a job in New York City without college education?
I'm thinking about moving to New York City from NC and only have one year of college. How hard would it be for me to find a decent job? Thank You. Decent=$10-12/hour

Answer 1 :
Really depends what your defintion of decent is. You can always get a job without a college education, but you are certainly limiting your options. 10-12$ an hour is peanuts in NYC. So yes, that would not be an issue.
Answer 2 :
You can definitely find jobs for $10 - $12 an hour here. But keep in mind that that is still not a great amount of money to live on, and you will definitely have to find shared living arrangements. For example - I was making that much money on my second job to help with my bills! If you have experience working in any particular field (waiter/retail/guest services/hotels) it might help you make a little more money.
Answer 3 :
$10 - $12 and hour is not enough to live in NYC unless you find several roommates, live in slum-like conditions or commute from NJ. Think about what you could afford on a salary like that in NC (rent, food, utilities, entertainment, haircuts, etc.). If 10 - 12 dollars an hour is enough to live the way you want to in NC, then multiply that by 2.5. That's how much money you would have to earn in NYC to have a comparable life style.
Answer 4 :
ok 10-12 an hour is not much to live on in nyc on your own. you must plan on getting a roommate. then dont even think about living in manhattan on that type of salary, youll be working just to pay the rent
Answer 5 :
not hard to find, but you can't live in NYC on $10 per hour. Rent on even the worst apartments in the city are well over $1000 per month. Even if you live outside the city (Brooklyn, Bronx, etc.) $10 an hour isn't going to do it. You'll spend a ton of money on getting in and out of manhattan every day..../
Answer 6 :
It is very hard to make it in the city without a college education - the cost of living here often calls for a $75,000 and above annual income - if you want to live comfortably. If you learn a trade that is in demand, you can easily make it. If you're only making $10-12 an hour, you'll have to settle for living in a low-income community where you might not know if it's good or bad. Getting a roommate is a better idea. Finish college where you are first, then use whatever you have a degree in to get a job in NY, the market is very competitive here and the economy is horrible right now, so plan carefully. Good luck!
Answer 7 :
yo boy you need to north carolina is cheaper than nyc!!! rent here starts at round a G up

If I go to college in New York City, will I need a car

If I go to college in New York City, will I need a car?
I am not positive where I want to go to college yet, by NYC is in the top 5. I thought about it this morning and I realized that I probably wouldn't need to buy a car. Is that accurate. Would you suggest having a car in NYC?

Answer 1 :
Well if it all depends on your financial situation, if you have enough money i would buy one, but also be aware their is alot of traffic and sometimes public transportation is easier and faster.
Answer 2 :
It would be cheaper to take cabs every wear. and plus think about wear you are going to park the car in that busy over populated city.
Answer 3 :
It costs too much to park a car and insure it in NYC. They have plenty of busses and trains. Use those.
Answer 4 :
You won't need a car in New York City if you live reasonably close to a subway entry. I have a friend who lived there 9 years and he got rid of his car. The NY subway system is the best and it's fast.
Answer 5 :
Not only do you not need a car in New York City, it's a huge pain in the ass to have one. I had a car in the city for a summer. When I totaled it, honestly, I wasn't that upset (at least not once I realized that nobody was hurt and the other car didn't even have a scratch on it). It was such a hassle spending half an hour or more to find free parking. If you screw up a ticket costs in the neighborhood of $200 and paid parking is a fortune. Plus, you've got to move it 4 times a week so they can do the street cleaning (we call it "alternate side parking"). And I lived in a neighborhood that had spots. If you're at NYU or another school downtown you'll never find parking, all the spots are reserved for construction, police, deliveries, and other similar vehicles. Get unlimited ride metrocards. That'll get you on the subway. the subway goes everywhere. It's relatively fast, easy, safe, and clean enough. Most New Yorkers use it every day to commute and for general travel. It's open 24/7 (though there are usually service changes on the weekends that can get confusing). That's all the transportation you'll need.
Answer 6 :
Robert, you don't need a car to live in New York City. This city has a very extensive public transit system, which is cheaper than owning a car. Therefore, don't bother having car. Take public transit. Good luck
Answer 7 :
No, you won't need a car in New York City. In fact, having a car here is a huge pain, so it's mostly only the very wealthy, who can afford the price of a small apartment every month for a space in a garage, who have cars here, and most everyone else just rents one every once in a while when they really need one. Good luck, and the link below is to a webpage about ZipCar Car Sharing, which is an interesting alternative to renting cars that a LOT of NYers use instead of owning OR renting...
Answer 8 :
You would be nuts to try to have a car in NYC! Especially as a college student. Live like a New Yorker - take mass transit!
Answer 9 :
I dont think that you will need a car in nyc. Theres too much traffic and hardly any space to park your car. The best way for you to get around the city its by subway.
Answer 10 :
Just a suggestion: don't let your license lapse even if you decide on NYC. You may want to rent a car if you want to get away within the TriState area and public transportation isn't an option; on the other hand you don't know where Life will put you. You may eventually move outside of NYC to an area (not including the 5 boroughs) where you'll have to drive. Good luck
Answer 11 :
You will most likely not need a car. There's so much public transportation here!
Answer 12 :
You will spend a fortune on parking. The traffic is awful. And some of my favorite parts of New York is watching fights on the trains and complaining about all of the sweaty people when your packed in during rush hour.
Answer 13 :
Haha, no.
