I currently am a junior in high school in Louisiana and I want to go to college in New York for massage therapy. I really want to move to New York and start a new life, of course visiting my family for holidays. So my questions are: How much does it cost to live in New York for basic needs? How does one become a resident of New York? Also, have you moved to another state and either regretted it or happy you did it?

I live in New York and let me tell ya, it's expensive. You're probably 15-17 years old right? I don't think you would be able to live in the city. Depending on the neighborhood though, if you're planning to live in Manhattan you can get a fairly small apartment for around 500 a month. If you have a car parking will be horrific, but you're going to have to move around it'll be the MTA. The fare is 2.25 a ride, so 2 rides is around 4.50 a day. You can get a monthly metrocard (pass that allows you unlimited rides for a month) for 89 dollars. I guess food is decent around here a regular supermarket visit every week sheds me around 50 dollars, so around 200 dollars a month for groceries. My bills total to around 300 dollar a month, includes gas, electric, water and cellphone. 500 dollars + 89 dollars a month + 200 dollars + 300 = 1089 dollars a month for the barebones. It would be hard, I don't think you should move to New York for school... Unless you're dorming and your parents are paying. Good luck. And no, I've never moved to a new state.

I always love change and i look at it more like an opportunity to do well and better. New York is definitely an expensive place but it is also loaded with opportunities for massage therapists with the best salons and massage parlors located there. Also it is well connected by trains so you can stay a little far away from the city and avoid the pricey apartments. You can find massage schools close to where you live, Massage Register is a good place to go look for schools that help you get a license/certificate to practice massage therapy. You can request for free information from the schools in new york and decide which school you like the best. All the best for your future!
