I'll be 18 in December and I have an itch to get out of the state and go to New York for college. I'm a little skeptical though because I've heard that NYC is really "fast" and I would be far away from home. Also, I want to stay on a residential campus...any suggestions for what colleges I should look into?

You could try Saint John's University which is in a residential area of Queens but still has Access to Public transportation. It is located in Fresh Meadows- Jamaica Estates area . There are many tree lined streets with lots of residential houses and a main thoroughfare called Union Turnpike where a city bus will take you in 15 minutes to the subway where you \can be into Manhattan in about 25 minutes. The University has recently built many dormitories on the campus and many students from other states attend the school. , It is a large campus and they are building new buildings all the time. I pass the school everyday and I see that it seems to be a place that the students like to be given that it is in a semi-suburban setting within the limits of New York city. It is located in the borough of Queens and I feel that this may be the best type of campus for you since you will be in NYC but you will not be in manhattan with all that hustle and bustle and you will have stores and shopping within walking distance of the University and still enjoy a suburban setting http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl Click on to the above link for google map and then enter in the find box Saint John's University Queens NY and then a map of the area will appear along with the location and size of the campus at Saint John's University. Also when you have found the location on the google map link you can hit the sattelite feature and you can see the streets and area surrounding the campus and even the campus itself I think that this will give you a better idea of where it is located in relation to the rest of New York city. NYC is indeed fast and you'll have to develop a tough skin in order to live here, even as a college student. The best advice is to apply to some school and then come to NYC for at least a long weekend (a week is better) to see if you like it. What you see on TV and in the movies is completely different than real life in New York. Now depending on your GPA schools to consider are: Columbia University NYU Cooper Union FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) Marymount Manhattan College The New School Pace University St. Johns And of course there is always CUNY (City University of New York) Good luck
