College New York: December 2011

Golden Gophers the New York Yankees of college hockey?
I love the Gophers men's hockey team and despise the New York Yankees baseball club and my friend called me a hypocrite and said the gophers were the Yankees of college hockey. I don't think that is right. It seems to me that the Yankees buy their teams and are truly evil. Fair comparison or not?

I don't think it is a fair comparison but it is an interesting one. I personally would call them more of the Red Sox because both clubs are extremely arrogant.

It's not a good comparison because 1. The Gophers don't dominate - how often do they win the National title? 2. The players aren't paid to play

sounds like your friend is a typical, ignorant fan of a roid - infested, out - of - control baseball i wouldn't put much credibility on his statements. people overuse that whole "Yankees of _____" as if its some type of putdown. after a while, i would start taking it as a compliment, cuz your team is having success. regardless if they are totally different from the Yankees in terms of how they acquire players. who cares if your friend is too stupid to differentiate the two different methods of great player acquisitions and team development.

Yay! Another college hockey fan! That's not exactly the best comparison.... at least not for college hockey in general. In the WCHA specifically maybe. Although WCHA championships seem to be almost equally divided b/w Denver and the Gophers. The Gophers have a successful hockey history and most players usually hail right from Minnesota (Not Vanek though! :P) I think it's fair to say that because of its history and reputation most talent from Minnesota choose play for the Gophers and the rest of the Minnesotan schools get the leftovers, so they usually stink. So, if you and your friend are from Minnesota, I can see why you might compare the Gophers to the Yankees... even if it is still a little ridiculous. Just so you know... I like the Gophers too. :) Not as much as my Spartans though. I have the 05'-06' and 06'-07' Gopher team posters above my desk in my room. It's a shame about Ryan Stoa this year though, eh?

It depends on how you look at it. You could draw a comparison by the fact that the gophers have won the wcha playoff or regular season wcha title 9 times since the 1991-1992 seaon. This indicates that they always field a good squad that has a chance to win the title every year. More often than not over this time period in the NCAA championships they choke much like the yankees have done in recent baseball playoffs. However if you base it solely on championships won this is not a good comparison as other teams have won more championships.
